ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Pieta Woolley is a staff reporter for the Vancouver's Georgia Straight,
where she covers everything from celebrity interviews with SEX IN THE CITY'S KIM CATTRALL to city council news to the proliferation
of new beauty pageants for Canada's oldest and largest alternative weekly paper. Her job is glamourous, but she is not.
LEARNING OUTCOME
Writing students will have a working knowledge of the techniques used in writing memoirs.
They will complete a minimum of one short memoir or compete the outline and several chapters of a book.
DESCRIPTION
When you tell the story of your life people say, "You should write a book."
You have secret stories, incredible stories that you are now willing to share.
You find the merriment in the mundane and the profound in the profane. You have all the stories.
You only need to know how to tell them. Memoir writing is the way to do it.

- Be accurate, detailed
- Illustrate subjects with drama tension
- Write and edit muscular, succinct prose
- Determine the correct style for the memoir
STRUCTURE
The class structure is a combination of online lecture, workshops, and assignments.
READING
Writing students read samples from great memoirs. Examples of these are:
Angela's Ashes, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sing, Tuesdays with Morrie, Running with Scissors.
EVALUATION
Students may be given tests from time to time - unannounced.
They will be assessed in the first two weeks of class for affinity for and commitment to the work.
Evaluation is on going, based on class work, development and assignments.
