ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Kelly Sarmiento is a published author and screenplay writer.
Kelly also works as an actress in film and theatre.
She has had the privilege to story edit the work of others and wrote and directed short films in addition to working in development,
production and post-production in film. Kelly is honored to share her love of storytelling through Schoolcreative.
Kelly majored in Creative Writing and left school with an Associate's degree.
LEARNING OUTCOME
Students will have a working knowledge of the techniques used in writing short stories and will be challenged to express themselves
through different voices as they study a variety of forms of technique.
They will complete one 10-page short story and 4 single-page exercises.
DESCRIPTION
This study of CHARACTER for the short story is a writing rich environment, geared towards individual style and expression.

STRUCTURE
The class is offered as an online course, with weekly chats and online workshops.
READING
Texts will consist of excerpts from "The Elements of Style" by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White,
as well as "A Passion for Narrative" by Jack Hodgins.
Students will read and discuss one contemporary and one classic short story.
During workshops it will be required to read and give feedback on the short stories in your group.
ASSIGNMENTS
Students will complete a minimum of:
- Weekly in chat assignments
- Independent at-home assignments
- Several one-page exercises
- One 10-page short story
- Written evaluation of your short story.
EVALUATION
Students will be assessed in the first two weeks of class for affinity for and commitment to the work.
All assignments will be evaluated. Evaluation is on going, based on the work, chats, development, feedback to classmates, and assignments.
